Renowned Buddhist leader Thich Nhat Hanh led more that 1,200 people in a five day exploration of mindful and peaceful living at Stonehill this week.Under the guidance of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh and his fellow Buddhist monks and nuns, retreat participants engaged in walking meditation, deep relaxation, silence, tea meditation, and Dharma (teaching) talks.People from all across the world attended the retreat which was facilitated by more than 80 Buddhist monks and sisters, as well as lay people. Many children and young people also participated.Using the College’s tranquil grounds and excellent facilities, retreat participants examined the art of mindfulness, being fully awake and aware in one’s daily life, which is integral to living compassionately and peacefully."The beauty of Thich Nhat Hanh's message and his presence touches you and helps you to open up to yourself and to others. In a way, it points you toward a greater awareness of the importance of love and loving," said retreat participant Mary Louise Collier of Hingham. On Wednesday, Thich Nhat Hanh met privately with College President Rev. Mark T. Cregan, C.S.C. for tea in Notre Dame du Lac residence hall where he spent his five days on campus.During his time at Stonehill, Thich Nhat Hanh gave talks, held question and answer sessions, and did walking meditation in the morning.
