Letters from Thay Everyone can see Thay in the Sangha

Everyone can see Thay in the Sangha

Cuoi-di-conTo Friends and Co-practitioners at the “One Buddha is Not Enough” Retreat

Dear Friends,

This is Thay again writing to you from the Massachusetts General Hospital. The treatment is going well and we have noticed several aspects of the improvement of Thay’s conditions after the first week. Thank you for having sent your loving energy to Thay. I learned that you all, both monastic and lay members of the Sangha, have practiced beautifully with all your hearts in the retreat. And that makes Thay very happy. The most wonderful thing is that after a few moments of sadness, worry and disappointment, all of us have settled down to practice and conduct the retreat the most wonderful way a Sangha could. The transformation and the joy you feel presently at the retreat is very nourishing and encouraging for Thay and for everyone of us. By now all of us have already seen the talent and the miracle of the Sangha. We have to acknowledge the fact that the Sangha has embodied the continuation of Thay in a beautiful way, and there is no reason for anyone of us to worry about the future of our practice. King Prasenajit of Shravasti one day told the Buddha that when he observed the Sangha, he could truly see the Buddha. One of the achievements of this retreat is that everyone can see Thay in the Sangha, including those who come to the retreat for the first time.

The Sangha is quite capable to continue the work of the Buddha and of our ancestral teachers. Thay would like to propose that the Colorado Retreat become an annual retreat in the tradition of Plum Village; and that all of you, as conditions permitted, will come together as members of the Sangha to allow other people to have a chance to practice the Dharma. Thus everyone of us in this retreat becomes a continuation of Thay. Much happiness has come to Thay’s heart every time Thay remembers that he has already had  a beautiful continuation. I have full confidence in the Sangha, and trust that my Sangha will always be able to perform the miracle of the practice, whether with or without Thay’s physical presence. Thay will be very happy to hear from each of you on this proposal.

Thank you again all my friends and disciples, and I hope to see you again very soon.

Love and trust,
Thay

Dear Thay, Dear sangha,
True Peace sangha has been holding you in our hearts during this time of healing. We send our collective energy to Thay on Fridays, when we sit together. This helps us to touch our interbeing with Thay and the larger sangha. Some of us were at Stonehill with Thay, and some of will be at Blue Cliff in October to enjoy the fresh mountain air and peace with the sangha.

At my husband and my home, we feel Thay's footsteps on the garden path we're building and we enjoy Thay's calligraphy in our home, reminding us that the present moment is truly a wonderful moment.

Deep gratitude for the beautiful teachings, so skillfully embodied and transmitted by Thay, that help us transform our suffering into joy.

much love,
Ghan Chee Chan Mat Dieu

Dear Thay,
I wish you a good recovery in which you may regain your strength. I myself have been twice in hospital this year with pneumonia so I can relate to what you are going through. However, there were many positive things for me to be grateful for. One friend of the Sangha brought me a book of your poems to read in hospital and it helped me a lot. Also gratitude to kind family and friends who helped me. I pray for your recovery and share with you the convalescence with the wish to help you too.
In October Brother Michael is coming to Spain and we shall have a week end retreat with him in a lovely place north of Barcelona. We are very much looking forward to this.
With gratitude for all you do

Dear dear Thay
What a beautiful lesson your "illness" hasd been for all of us. Though I am not at the Retreat, (I write from India), yet I too can feel how a part of everything am. No matter where I stay or how far that may be. You have experientially, taught us the meaning of continuation.... as you have taught us so much through your own example, being and presence.
Thank you Thay. You are an inspiration. We love you

I am not a buddhist. I do not know what to believe spiritually. Religion terrifies me. But I do love your teachings and apply them into my life. I want to be like you. Compassionate. Loving. Kind. All those wonderful things. But I feel so alone in all this. I know thats silly. There are so many who want to be all these good things you teach. I wish I could meet you. Even for a minute. Even if we say nothing at all. That would make me happy. Then I wouldn't feel so alone.

a sunny moment from our garden
written by Joke Peters , August 29, 2009
Dear Thây, dear Sangha,
Thank you for the Papendal retreat earlier this year, in may. Since then I check the news at the Plum websites more frequently. It is how I found out that EIAB could do with some help and ofcourse we will help. And so yesterday I learned that you had to have earnest medical care, Thây. I wholeheartedly wish you a good rest and a fine recovery!
These days in our small frontgarden 'Mina Lobata' is a grand plant and beautifully flowering, dear Thây. Its spike of flowers range up from yellow at the bottom to orange and red on top. The climbing plant is family to 'Morning Glory' and sweet potatoes, that you may know too. Here 'Mina Lobata' grows within eyesight of a strong, softpink, old English rose and a darkred, more crimson actually, umbelliform Achillea. They are near to the beetroots and saladleaves I have grown this summer. This sunny moment in the lush green and bright, colourfull livelyhood of our garden, I send you with love.
Take care and I will do that too, so that I may learn more from you and the sangha in the present moment and times to come. With a smile, Joke Peters from The Netherlands

Wondrous Music of the Heart
written by Win Grace , August 28, 2009
Dear Dear Thay,

I have just returned from the Estes Park retreat. I was also there in 2007 (and Upper Hamlet at Plum Village in Feb 200smilies/cool.gif. I was very sad and worried (even though you said not to worry) to hear of your illness, but my own resolve to practice for and with you at the retreat was strengthened. My gratitude for the deep deep practice of the monastics often overflowed as they bore us up in spite of their own worry and sadness. It was very wise that we heard your letter, then heard the monastics chanting Avalokiteshvara, some with tears running down their faces, and then to go into Noble Silence until after lunch the next day. Thus we were able to support each other in silence and to transform the fear, worry and sadness. The retreat had many beginning practitioners and their determination to practice was inspiring. I noticed a difference from two years earlier. Perhaps we had all leaned on you at that time, and it seemed to take longer for the practice of the sangha to deepen. But at this retreat, the practice was very strong, the petty annoyances and struggles seemed unimportant, and the silence and focus were very good. I saw and felt your presence in the many Buddhas who were there.

I am very happy to hear that your health is improving. I send love and smiles to you, dear Teacher.

With a warm heart, Win Grace

Dear Thay,

I have never met you, but I feel that I know you deeply through your books. They have touched me deeply and have allowed me to enjoy the present moment. I feel as if you are my teacher and sometimes I feel that you are with me as I am conscious of my breath. I have requested monks and nuns of the SRF organization to pray for your well being. I hope you feel 100% better. You are always in our hearts, in the lotus, and in the buddha.

with love

from Italy
written by matteo zanella , August 28, 2009
Dear Thay,

thanks to Thay and to colleagues health workers taking care of Thay's lungs.

When Thay and Sangha walk Touching the Earth, sit or rest Touching the Earth- we nourish the lungs, on Oriental Medicine.

Thank to Thay's numerous teachings getting more and more precious for sick and healthy people around the world. This is one, present on these days everywhere:
"(...). When animals in the forest get wounded, they find a place to lie down, and they rest completely for many days. (...). When we humans get sick, we just worry! (...), but we don't stop. (...)", the hearth of the Buddha's teaching, page 23.

Now, I'm not physically present in Italian Sangha Retreat on this week guided by Helga e Karl. Many were in Plum Village for Summer Opening on this month, and on this month we had the first Young Retreat in Italy too! guided by Sister Jina.
Tomorrow I'll join to founders' Meeting-Retreat engaged for the future Italian practice centre.

A lotus,
matteo

Thay

Dear Thay-

All of my well wishes and much love flow from our home to yours in hopes that you will recover soon. Please know that you are in a superb medical facility. In the last several years, I have spent much time in MGH--first with my brother-in-law who lost his kidneys, then with my husband who had two brain surgeries in March, and again, with my mother-in-law's brain surgery only a few weeks ago. The staff are wonderful and the care is excellent. My only wish is that I could come to the hospital and see you/take care of you myself. If you require anyone to advocate for you, or would like someone to come and read to you or anything, please have someone email me. I can be there in 20 minutes. Love- Heather Panahi
