Celebrating 1,000 Years of Hanoi

download in *.pdf

In the year 1010, one thousand years ago, the first king of the Ly dynasty founded Thang Long, the city now known as Hanoi. The Ly dynasty has been described as “the most compassionate, peaceful and harmonious in the history of Vietnam” by the eminent historian Hoang Xuan Han. This, he wrote, was “thanks to the influence of Buddhism”.

The first king of the Ly dynasty was Ly Thai To. From a very young age he had been trained as a Buddhist monastic aspirant at Luc To temple by Zen Master Van Hanh. When he ascended to the throne he organized political and cultural life in the spirit of openness, fearlessness and non-dualism as taught by Zen Master Van Hanh. The practice of Buddhism gave the nation a solid foundation of peace and happiness which lasted for centuries. Ly Nhah Tong, the fourth king in the Ly Dynasty, spoke of Master Van Hanh with great respect. “Master Van Hanh's actions embraced the whole of the past, present and future”, he said. “His words presaged events with extraordinary accuracy. In his hometown Co Phap, he needed only to plant his staff in the ground and sit in stillness, and the city of Thang Long could enjoy stability and peace for ever.”

Photos from Daffodils Great Ordination Ceremony

Jan. 12 to Jan. 19, 2010

Recently our Plum Village Practice Center had the great happiness of conducting our annual Great Ordination Ceremony. The Daffodil Great Precept Transmission Ceremony, actually a series of ceremonies lasting one week, was a beautiful and joyful practice of transmitting trainings, precepts and Dharma lamps to new Dharma teachers. It was a true “Dharma Festival” in the spirit of the Plum Village tradition of mindfulness, joyful celebration, and togetherness. Venerable monks and nuns from Vietnam and Europe, brothers and sisters from many of our practice centers, lamp recipients, and family and friends from around the world came to support and to participate in the program.

Prayers for Bat Nha – Short Film from Sangha Brother Velcrow Ripper

“If we want to end the war in the world, we need to end the war in our own hearts.”

Dear friends,
Let us continue to send our energy of practice, our peace and calm to the Bat Nha Brothers and Sisters who are still under surveillance and without a clear resolution to their situation. Sangha Brother Velcrow Ripper has made this little film as a prayer to our BN Monastics. Let us also send our energy to the Abbot of Phuoc Hue Temple and his Sangha who has compassionately taken our young brothers and sisters in for refuge; to the many lay friends and supporters of Bao Loc who are fearlessly bringing food and coming to help with cooking and bringing the sick to the hospital at the risk of persecution; and to our elder Brothers Phap Hoi, Phap Sy, and Phap Tu, who can not return to their Bat Nha Community of younger monks and nuns; and to all beings who are still covered in the cloud of misunderstanding and suspicion.

“Love is born from understanding – understanding the suffering of the other person, his or her suffering and deep aspiration; and that understanding brings about true love. And in order to understand, we must have the time to look deeply and to listen deeply.”

Commemorating Ancestor Master Tang Hoi

In Plum Village, on Sunday morning, 01.11.2009, the fourfold Sangha of the three hamlets had a mindfulness day in Lower Hamlet.  That day was also the annual day when we commemorate Master Tang Hoi, the first Zen Teacher in Vietnam.

After the Dharma talk offered by Thay, the Sangha with sanghatis all in good order gathered in the Assembly of Stars Meditation Hall to perform a ceremony honoring Master Tang Hoi, and also honoring Thay's mother who passed from this life around this same time of year (many years ago).  Thay shared with the fourfold Sangha about Master Tang Hoi's life and greatest works, such as the introduction to the Anapananusmriti Sutra.  To find out more about Master Tang Hoi, please read the book “Master Tang Hoi” which was published by Parallax Press and is also available in Vietnamese, French, and other languages.

Enjoying Halloween

Last night the brothers and sisters from Upper and Lower Hamlets got together to celebrate halloween – so what if we were one day late! It was a lot of fun!  In the presence of Ghandi, an Egyptian mummy, a Japanese princess and other notable costumed characters, their was much laughing and being silly together to be had.   Jack-o-lanterns decorated the room, brothers and sisters took turns introducing themselves in costume, singing and dancing, (as well as trying to scare each other – only occassionally successfully!)

Program for hungry children and other urgent charity tasks in Vietnam

Understanding and Love – Hieu & Thuong

In the early 1960`s the idea for a school for social-service for young people was founded in Saigon by our beloved teacher Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh and some of his friends. The school does not exist anymore, but there is still an ambicious program running for supporting poor people and hungry children in forgotten regions of Vietnam: “Hieu & Thuong”. The international Sangha gives a lot of money to support Plum Village in this important task. Thay never wrote a book about this work and so many people do not know details of this program. This program is a sign for “engaged” and “applied” Budhism. Now in Germany a Web-Site from Maitreya-Fonds, that supports “Hieu & Thuong”, is established. Here you can find a lot of detail information about this program in german, english and partly also in vietnamese language.
Please click: www.maitreya-fonds.de for further information.
