I was moved to tears by this lovely tribute to and invocation of Avalokiteshvara. Observing my beloved Thay and the monks and nuns abiding in peace and mindfulness, I felt connected. I was especially moved when the camara panned to the crowd gathered. It was then one could see the profound effect the chant had on individuals - the hope and power of mindfulness, the hope for the world. Although I am a long-time Buddhist, I have not yet overcome suffering. The obstacles in my life seem insurmountable. Indeed, my life now is an open wound, and I am crying out for help. Viewing this video was reassuring and made me feel less alone. (I wish I could be there, though.) Thank you for this blessing today. Bless you in return, many times over.

Your humble devotee,

Bonnie

Wonderful retreat, great Soult Thay
written by cloris Sciaroni , September 04, 2011
will never forget this experience, my italian retreat with many other brothers and sisters "on the way". This wonderful compassion Mantra chantet by the monks and nuns and by us also was so great and entered in my heart so deep that i could feel an incredible joy and unity with all the people there but also with all the creatures on the earth and with the stars and the Universe. Never forget that! Thank you thank you Thay, you are the spiritual father of all of us! Love you Cloris Sciaroni- Switzerland

This is the first chant I've ever listened to being very new to Buddhism. It's rather enchanting.

Chanting meaning
written by ErikT , July 25, 2011
You can think of "Namo" as meaning "praise" or "adoration" and Avalokiteshvaraya is the name of the Boddhisattva of Compassion. They are singing the name in each syllable and the effect is that it sounds like lyrics.

Simply: we adore you Avalokiteshvaraya. smilies/smiley.gif

They're chanting Namo Avalokiteshvaraya, Sanskrit for "Homage to Avalokiteśvara." Avalokiteśvara is the Bodhisattva of Great Compassion. He (or mostly she, depending on the national tradition) is known as Quan Âm in Vietnamese, Guanyin in Chinese, Kwan Um in Korean, Kannon in Japanese, and Chenrezig in Tibetan. The name has to do with hearing the cries of the world.

As lovely as the mood and melody of this Chant; I would love to know the lyrics to make it more meaningful; so, what is being said?
