The Practice of Generosity

Plum Village and its affiliated practice centers are non-profit organizations that are run through donation and financial contributions from retreatants

thay-belland guests like you. We are very grateful for each contribution; we consider each contribution, regardless of the amount, as a gift of the heart.

The practice of generosity, Dana, is one of the most basic practices that can bring us joy and happiness in everyday life. It includes offering not only material support, but also sharing our time and energy, our experience, and our insight. Without generosity, both material and spiritual, we would not be able to support each other and our growing communities and many engaged activities around the world.

For those attending a Plum Village retreat, we suggest a recommended financial contribution. This helps guests to have a basic idea of how much to give; it represents an amount that will help support the operating costs of our retreat centers. We do our best to make this cost low so that we can accommodate as many people as possible. For example, we offer a lower suggested contributions for those camping compared with those staying in single or double rooms since the cost of maintaining the campsites is lower than maintaining our buildings.

In addition to making the suggested contributions as low as possible, we also offer further reductions to those in financial need. These reductions may be for young people, students, unemployed persons, or others going through financial difficulty. We also reduce the recommended contribution for our long-term guests and staff who offer tremendous generosity through their time, energy and practice.

If you are so inspired, we ask you to consider making a donation in addition to the recommended contribution, depending on your financial capacity. Even small donations of five to ten Euros help a lot! Your donation may be directed towards one or more of the following or can be offered as a general donation:

  • Offsetting retreat costs for staff, students, or persons in financial need

  • Building, maintaining and renovating our practice centers

  • Supporting our growing monastic communities

  • Aiding displaced monks and nuns from Bat Nha monastery in Vietnam

  • Supporting schools in poorer areas of Vietnam

  • Developing a new online monastery

  • Supporting the international WakeUp movement for young people

  • Offsetting the travel and organizational costs of retreats around the world (can be directed towards specific regions or communities)

Please see our online contribution page to make a donation.
